Nantucket City Guide

I must admit, I never thought I was an east coast type. Please don’t take this the wrong way because it is completely stereotyping, but I always had the impression East Coasters/the East Coast was snobby, pretentious, and not my kind of people/place. When I want to take a vacation I look for a few things – experience, a relaxed environment, and groups of people I will enjoy. Those were three things I didn’t think I would find in Nantucket. Now, for the good part – COULD I HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG? I fell 100%, head-over-heels, cloudy head, in love with Nantucket. It was a number of things: the beaches were clean, everyone was nice, it felt safe, the weather was insanely amazing, and you felt like you were worlds away from ordinary. A few specifics I love about Nantucket is the ability to bike anywhere and everywhere (we even biked from town to Sconset), the food is incredibly fresh, and it is really wholesome. I know the last one has you scratching your head but in a world full of sex, murder and lies (okay, okay, that is dramatic but you get it) it is nice to go to a place where you can get back to the basics of life. And since service is almost non existent on the Island, you can really get back to the basics of life.

The hubs and I can’t stop raving about Nantucket. We only hope to have enough money in the future to go back, every.single.summer. So here I am, eating my humble pie because you East Coasters sure know how to do a beach town! And let me tell you, you might have just turned this southerner into a wannabe East Coaster – at least for the summers. ; )

Since I loved Nantucket so much (and am dying to go back) here is my Nantucket City Guide!

7 Fall Wardrobe Staples

What defines a smart shopping investment? Did you wear it more than a few times? Is it a classic piece you can wear for years to come? Will it transfer to the next season? In the past I’ve made some smart shopping investments and I’ve made some poor shopping investments. Below are seven smart fall investments I made last year and seven items I think your closet needs this year. And my prediction, I think each one will carry over to fall 2016 too! So invest now before you have regret not buying it.

The Cuyana Cape

cuyana cape

The Cuyana Cape comes in three colors: camel, grey, and black. I bought the grey last year and practically wore it out. I styled it with track pants for a long distance flight, I styled it with a dress in Charleston, I wore it for Christmas. It didn’t matter where I was, I wore this cape. The ways to style it are endless and I am excited to show you all the ways in an upcoming post. For this fall I hope to invest in the black and the camel as I wore the grey so many times last year it only makes sense.

Over-The-Knee Boots

so-then-they-say-71

If there is one thing I remember last year it was how hard I searched for the perfect over-the-knee boot. I even bought these Rachel Zoe’s Nevena boots for far more than I should have spent. And would you believe it, they were too big but I wanted them so badly I wore them anyways (they are currently being sold on my Poshmark). All I wanted was a sleek, suede, pointed-toe boot. So when I came across these Missguided they were almost too good to be true. While the other boots I had found were in the $1K range and these being $80 I couldn’t not try them. When they arrived they were absolutely perfect. Every time I wore them someone asked who made them. They looked far more like a $1K pair than the $80 I had spent. I prayed they would come in black too and when they came out earlier this year I snagged them right away. Now I can’t wait to wear these all fall/winter and into next year too!

White Coat (or this option)

So-then-they-say-43

There are three colors you can always count will be in style: black, blue, and white. White is timeless, chic, and elegant. It is one of my favorite colors to wear year round. It is such a statement to wear white from head-to-toe in the cooler months which is why I recommend always having a white coat on hand. I really like this one and this one for their lightweight and airy feel.

Ankle Booties

so-then-they-say-12-2

A good ankle bootie never goes out of style so I think every closet should have one. I loved the cutout of this Zara pair but I also found a few below that will be the perfect closet staple.

Floppy Hat

so-then-they-say-41

A floppy hat is so important for a closet. If you think you can’t pull off a hat, try it anyways! They really take any outfit to the next level.

options // this hat (under $30), this hat, this hat, and this hat!

Grey Coat

so-then-they-say-301

Grey is this years black. If you notice the trends you will notice grey is everywhere. And it isn’t going anywhere soon. Invest in a great grey coat and you can wear it with any outfit. That is right, you can wear it with blues, whites, blacks, red’s, and even grey’s!

Black Duster

So-then-they-say

You have been seeing duster coats all over the Internet and in stores. But what is a duster? It is a woman’s loose, lightweight, full-length coat without buttons. I absolutely adore this type of jacket. It is so effortlessly cool. I wear mine non-stop in the cooler months. Throw it on with jeans and sneakers or paired over a dress and heels it is extremely versatile and always chic!

Finding Your Signature Lipstick

Growing up my Aunt always wore red lipstick. I still remember the kisses that lingered for hours on my cheek. However much I hated having to scrub my cheek off I always loved that she had a signature color. Through the years we started a tradition of finding stuffed animals with these big, red lips painted on them and send them to each other. It was our little inside joke and I loved it!  As I grew up and began to wear make-up I was never scared to experiment (I think I get that from my Aunt). I would try reds, pinks, and oranges and always rock them as only my aunt would. Through all of my lipstick trials I never had a “signature color” and desperately wanted to find one as my aunt did.  I searched and searched but couldn’t quite find the perfect fit. All I wanted was one red and a few natural colors I could wear daily. Was that too much to ask? While I do love Revlon ‘Love That Red’, I wanted to find a red that was a little more toned down.

My search started to come to an end after sitting at the Neiman Marcus beauty counter two years ago. While playing around with lipsticks I discovered one that I couldn’t put down – Pimpante. It has a unique orange tint but is actually really natural and perfect for daytime as well as nighttime. I was smitten! I wore (and still wear) this lipstick straight, day and night, for two years! During the day I would put one swipe on and for nighttime I would double up. People stopped me numerous times in the street asking what lipstick I was wearing. I really felt like I was making my aunt proud! Some would say that would make it your signature color! And I would be happy to take it as it looks great, but one day while walking by MAC I decided to pop in. Thirty minutes later I had found my very natural daytime and beautiful red nighttime lipstick. ‘Kinda Sexy‘ and ‘Russian Red‘ completed my little pack of signature colors.

I love my lipsticks and can be seen wearing at least one of them daily! If you are looking for a red, unique, or natural color I HIGHLY recommend test driving one of these!
