Journey to Growth

I love getting deep with those I am meeting or those I already know. I find surface conversation and small talk to be an absolute bore. I know both are bound to happen in life and are unavoidable but really, if I can, I try to.  I really love to meet, learn about or from, and connect with interesting people who have more to say than, “Oh my gosh. Where did you get that bag?” Okay, I am totally guilty of asking that question but I do truly love to get to know people on another level. Ever since I was little I have studied – study the way people move, interact, dress, and who they are. I am notorious for asking a million questions (I get it from my dad) and trying to really figure out how everything works. What I love most about people – everyone has their own story. You just have to ask the right questions to find it out.

Lately I have been on a journey to connect and to really dig deeper. I am a FIRM believer in that everything happens for a reason. Certain instances in life (good or bad), people you meet, relationships you have, books you read – it all leads you to the path and growth you are supposed to take. Being that I ask a million questions there have always been two which have been off limits – Religion and Politics. Since I am very passionate about both it is a struggle for me to avoid these. Since I feel a tug toward digging into the spiritual side more, I’ve turned to religion to discuss. Yup, I have done the totally “un-PC” thing to do and started to ask those I admire their religious and or spiritual beliefs. Basically, what grounds them? Not that I want to judge or be judged in return, or that I want to try to sway them, but because I am genuinely interested. I have a real thirst to learn more and understand those around me. I think part of being on a “spiritual quest” means asking those you respect lots of questions and being open to what they say. I really believe everyone has a very unique and individual perspective on things and if you are open to listening to them, you may discover something you never knew.

I must admit – over the years I have been amazed at where my life events have taken me. I have been challenged, down, up, and opened. I have discovered new things and questioned old, but I have always known it is part of my “life’s journey.” It really is a beautiful circle. Maybe that is why I connect so much with travel – it just reinstates how many magical things there are yet to see or connect with in the world! One book in particular which I have fallen in love with is Soul Secrets by Miki Jacobs.  Trust me – I know this book probably isn’t for everyone but it was one of the first times I have read a book where I go, “Wow, this book is exactly what I need, at this exact time (all part of the plan).”

Since this post is probably the most raw I have written I have to admit – I am not quite sure why I felt the need to write it. But I did. All I am hoping is that at least one person out there connects to it and feels inspired to keep pursing their journey!

Artisan Inspired :: Architect Barbara Bestor

The hubs and I share a mutual love for modern yet cozy homes. He actually has an incredible eye for architecture, design, and spacing. We could walk into a place and he sees all of the angles, lighting, and spacing, what could be better and what he would do to change it. I have a pile of napkins from restaurants where he has designed our future home while waiting on our food. He really has a gift! When we walk the dog we like to take her to different parts of Dallas so we can see all different types of homes and pick out our favorites. We love to find the ones from the 60’s that would make “a perfect modern home.”  We always fall in love with the same homes which have similar qualities: clean lines, minimal design, modern touches, architecturally interesting.

Being that I love modern and unique homes, I have a total girl crush on architect Barbara Bestor. There are certain times in your life when you stumble upon designers, photographers, fashion, architecture where you look at the piece and go, “That is me. That is me in one piece/project.” I had that moment over Barbara’s work. She has completed some of the most amazing contemporary designs I have ever seen. Her work on the Beachwood Cafe was awarded the Top Most Important Projects in LA. And her designs in offices like Beats by Dre and Nasty Gal are 100% award winning as well. But, it is her work on residential that has my heart palpitating. More narrowly focused – her work on the Toro Canyon House. Which up until this time has only been my imagination dream home, she turned it into reality. The spacing, design, and structure are breathtaking! She believes in architecture as a form of pop culture and it shows. Her spaces are complete works of art. Barbara has the unique ability to make each piece of her work cohesive yet entirely different. She is truly a genius! Living by the motto that we should all “experience strange beauty everyday” she continues to prove herself to be one of the greats! I just hope one day I can afford for her to carry out that “napkin dream home.”

Look Linger Love Home Inspiration

There aren’t very many homes I walk into and love everything about them. Usually there are certain aspects I would change – be it the decor or the layout. Not that I am a design professional but I do have very picky taste. However, from the moment I walked into Chassity of Look Linger Loves home, I was smitten. It was clean and modern, yet extremely warm and inviting. My favorite style decor is Scandinavian  – fresh,  minimal, and monotone. However, Chassity has me fully convinced I need pops of color. Her design palette was clean but with unexpected hints of bright colors. It was done to perfection (as you can see). Chassity has two beautiful kids and you can tell she took them into consideration when designing, but kept a perfect balance for both kids and adults! Which is so important to me! However, the kids play room was one of my favorite parts! Imagine colors galore with tea sets and tents. Oh, and trolls along the walls (I might steal this idea one day)! I mean, what else does a kid need? But my real favorite part? Her stove in her kitchen and the patterned floor in her hallway. I love that she used a lot of white but then added different design textures using her floors, the lights, and the art. Really, I could gush all day  but I will let you browse for yourself! It really is a dream home tucked nicely into one of my favorite cities – Charleston! Seriously Chassity, be more perfect!
