Tourist Outfit

I recently read somewhere that when we travel, “we are all tourists, so get over it.” Honest and truthful. When I travel, especially to Europe/UK, I hate for people to know I am a tourists. I try to blend in as much as possible. One with the people. However, I have been told by my sweet, sweet husband that I scream American. Bah humbug! I don’t know what it is about the way we look, perhaps we do our make-up daily and that gives us away, but even I can spot an American from a mile away. Despite the bad portrayal we Americans get I always think we look put together and very maintained. It isn’t that I am not extremely proud of my heritage, because I am, but sometimes it is fun to play something else. Star in another role.

Even though it isn’t London or Paris a few weeks ago I was a tourist in New Orleans. I fully embraced my tourist persona and wore sneakers, comfy t-shirt, and breathable shorts so I could site-see all day without one single complaint. And it worked! Despite my efforts in the past to look fashion/cool to tour a new city I always lose site of what I am seeing because I am blinded by pain from those really uncomfortable shoes. Slowly but surly I am learning to embrace the comfortable look over the, “I totally live here and know all the cool cafes to eat at. Can’t you tell? Don’t I look like a local?” And you know what is even better? Half the time the locals know a lot of walking is involved and dress comfier than I do! If that isn’t enough to turn you into a comfy tourist dresser, maybe you are a lost cause. Just kidding! But I do recommend you buy a great pair of sneakers/flats (a pair that is comfy and cute) for this summers excursions! To make sure you are covered I found my 20 favorite pairs! Inspiration from Sézane

Since we look for inspiration in different places I thought I would share one that always gives me great ideas! Have you ever heard of the shop, Sézane? It is a french website and it curates the most quintessential french items. Everything from your wardrobe to your home – they have it. They update their product selection monthly which always has me sitting with anticipation for that new e-mail saying they released their next collection. I absolutely love every single piece they create. It is simple, feminine, clean, and classic. Sometimes I see items I already have in my closet – like basic leather shorts – and I am inspired by how they styled theirs. While they paired theirs with a chambray shirt I had previously been inspired by a striped shirt they had on their site a few months back. The thing I love about french dressing is, everything can be paired together. For example, while they styled their striped shirt with skinny grey jeans and their leather shorts with a chambray skirt, I flip flopped the two and they worked perfectly together.

While all of use go through slumps where we are completely uninspired by our closet I challenge you to always think of the french – simple dressing with a few key pieces. I have been thinking a lot about what I want to wear in Europe this summer. Everything I buy I have Paris on the brain. For example, I really wanted to purchase these Vince wedges on sale but the amount of times I will wear heels will be slim so I had to pass. Instead I purchased these black ballet flats which are not as much fun but way more practical. Two weeks ago I actually did a MAJOR closet clean out. I went from a completely full closet to about 1/4 full. I went from having 40 dresses to five. Yes, FIVE! It felt great to purge but now I am left with next to nothing to wear. Since I have Paris on the brain as well as a need to re-stock my closet I have been buying a lot of basics and closet staples.

I know I preach this all the time but I find it so fulfilling when you have a closet that can all be mixed-and-matched together. Gone are the days I buy all trendy garments – maybe because I can’t afford to be trendy anymore – but really I don’t think it is my style anymore. Because the french dress very minimal (which I fully embrace) and wear layers, I picked up this Zara boyfriend jacket on a recent shopping trip. I immediately thought it would be perfect for multiple different occasions: the flight over, walking the streets, over a dress for dinner, etc. The possibilities are endless and for me, that is the dream!
