J.Crew button-up (similar + on sale), Zara jeans, Christian Louboutin Pigalle heels, Celine clutch, Karen Walker Helter Skelter sunnies

When my friend Lynsey and I get ready for an event the conversation goes something like this, “Are you going to dress up?” “Probably, what will you wear?” “Oh, just jeans, a button-up, and heels.” “Perfect, me too.”

There is something so classic about a button-up and jeans. The look has been around for decades, although with different accessories and styles, it has remained pretty much the same. The masculinity and minimalistic approach are my two favorite things about it. For countless years women have stolen their mens shirts. I do it on the regular and can usually be found hopping around town in the hubs shirts (or on the blog). I don’t know why it is but I always feel like Brice picks out better button-ups than I do. This is what I have learned about how men pick out shirts – material, fit, price. It is so simple that it makes me laugh at myself for spending hours debating on a wether or not to get a single blouse. I oooh and ahh about the style, the brand, the way it falls, the way it feels, the colors, the pattern, the weight, and so on and so on. I mean really we should take a tip from the men and decide, “do we like it?” Yes. “Will we wear it a lot?” Yes. “Are the price and quality in line?” Yes. Then buy the damn button-up. black and white.

You can style a button-up a million+ ways (here are 21 ideas from Stylecaster). It is essential to every closet to have a great fitting, white button-up. I don’t use the word “investment” a lot on this blog because I think there are only a few pieces in your closet worth the splurge – this is one of them! I would spend a decent amount of money on a solid button-up that fits correctly because the price per wear ratio is really good. Once you have your perfect solid blouse (best selection on the web) you can move on to different colors, patterns, and styles. If I am not wearing a t-shirt you can guarantee I am in a button-up. I love throwing it on with jeans and flats for a relaxed look or with heels for a night out. Clearly the material of the blouse will depict how casual or dressy the look is so I suggest starting your collection with one cotton and one silk (I live in this one) – day and night. Wether you are like Lynsey and myself and wear the look out or want to run errands around town, you will get a lot of use out of this purchase! Just be sure it fits like it was made for you!

I have hand selected a few options below to get your collection going!

  1. This is the one item I just can’t seem to incorporate into my aesthetic. I don’t know if it is because I am petite but I feel like I don’t look filled out in these types of shirts.

  2. I love this! You look so effortless. I’ve been thinking about pulling the trigger on the Everlane silk button-down, but I’m worried about it being too see through and having to wear a tank underneath. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  3. I love this look! I went back to your older post and you’re so right about fashion becoming unattainable. I love real world outfits like this one!
